The mighty Slade reach No. 1 with ‘Mama Weer All Crazee Now’ during its second week of release. Their third chart-topper and the lead single from their third album, ‘Slayed’, it remains in the Top 40 for an incredible 10 weeks!
#OnThisDay September 10, 1964
Widely regarded as one of the most influential singles of all time, The Kink’s ‘You Really Got Me’ begins a two-week residency at the top of the UK charts. With its ferociously distorted guitars, it’s no surprise that it’s credited with helping birth heavy metal.
#OnThisDay September 11, 1970
One can only wonder what the results would have been like when Jimi Hendrix reveals during his last interview that he’d love to work with Miles Davis. Given that Miles was deep into his electric period, it’s safe to guess that the results would’ve been mind-blowing!
#OnThisDay September 12, 1984
Pop’s premier party starter, Mr Billy Ocean, releases his fifth studio album ‘Suddenly’. Carrying the hits ‘Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run)’, ‘Loverboy’ and of course the timeless title track, it reaches number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Do you still have your copy?
#OnThisDay September 13, 1985
Bruce Springsteen does rather well for himself at the MTV Video Awards when he scoops Best Male Video for ‘I’m On Fire’ and Best Stage Performance For A Video for ‘Dancing In The Dark’. Another notable winner is USA For Africa who take home the Best Group gong for ‘We Are The World’.
#OnThisDay September 14, 1997
Jimi Hendrix becomes the first rock musician to be honoured with an English Heritage Blue Plaque, which is unveiled at 23 Brook Street, Mayfair, London, where he briefly lived in the 60s. Did you know that the composer George Frideric Handel lived next door at No. 25 some 225 years earlier?
#OnThisDay September 15, 1985
Bonnie Tyler reaches at No. 2 in the UK singles charts with ‘Holding Out For A Hero’. Originally recorded in 1984 for the ‘Footloose’ soundtrack, it only just about cracked the Top 100 upon its release in 1984 and would have to wait about a year before scoring big when it was re-released.
