THIS WEEK IN ROCK

September 28, 2019

Who did MTV declare the Best Act Ever in 2008? The answer may shock you…

#OnThisDay September 23, 1949
And it’s a happy 70th birthday to the one and only Bruce Springsteen! If you were to play just one song to someone who’d never heard The Boss before, what would it be and why?

#OnThisDay September 24, 1957
Elvis Presley releases the title track from his third movie, ‘Jailhouse Rock’. An international smash-hit, it becomes his ninth US No.1 and his second UK chart-topper. The dance sequence from the movie is regarded by many scholars as being one of the earliest examples of a promo video.

#OnThisDay September 25, 1970
The first episode of ‘The Partridge Family’ is aired on US TV and stars Shirley Jones, Danny Bonaduce, Susan Dey and, of course, the superstar-to-be David Cassidy. Did you know that the show featured guest appearances from young actors including Jodie Foster, future Charlie’s Angel Farrah Fawcett and Jedi-in-waiting Mark Hamill?

#OnThisDay September 26, 1954
Happy birthday to Jefferson Starship guitarist Craig Chaquico who scored a massive 1979 hit with the AOR classic ‘Jane’. Turn this one right up and get those air guitars out!

#OnThisDay September 27, 1999
Manic Street Preachers score their first No. 1 album with ‘This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours’. The album yielded five hit singles and the band scooped the Best Album and Best British Group gongs at the 1999 Brit Awards as well as Best Band, Best Album, Best Live Act, Best Single and Best Video at the 1999 NME Awards.

#OnThisDay September 28, 2008
Kings Of Leon pitch up at the top of the UK charts for a two-week residency with their fourth album, ‘Only By The Night’. Did you know that it’s lead single, ‘Sex On Fire’, has been certified 3 x Platinum in the UK alone?

#OnThisDay September 29, 2008
The competition is strong but there can only be one winner as Rick Astley is declared the Best Act Ever at the MTV Europe Awards. Who would get your vote these days?
