Bob Dylan celebrates the 30th anniversary of his recording debut with an all-star tribute concert at Madison Square Garden in New York. The stellar line-up includes guest performances from George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Ronnie Wood, Tom Petty, Neil Young and Roger McGuinn.

Legendary New York venue CBGBs – widely regarded as the birthplace of US punk – closes its doors for the last time after it hosts a final gig by Patti Smith.

Elvis Presley’s third movie, ‘Jailhouse Rock’, premieres in The King’s adopted home town of Memphis, Tennessee. Did you know that it’s Elvis playing bass on the recording of ‘(You’re So Square) Baby I Don’t Care’ that appeared on the soundtrack?

Altered Images crack the UK Top 10 for the first time when their third single, ‘Happy Birthday’, moves up 11 places to No. 5. Peaking at No.2, it’s later certified silver by the BPI for sales in excess of 250,000 copies.
