THIS WEEK IN ROCK

November 10, 2019

Mae Boren Axton makes history, chart climaxes, birthdays and more – it’s This Week In Rock.

#OnThisDay November 4, 1973
David Cassidy is at No. 1 in the UK singles chart for the second week running with the double A-side, ‘Daydeamer/The Puppy Song’. Did you know that this was the 10th best-selling single in the UK in 1973?

#OnThisDay November 5, 1957
Many happy returns to the A Flock Of Seagulls’ finely coiffured frontman Mike Score. A former hairdresser, his skills came in handy when devising the unique image that helped pave the band’s road to international success!

#OnThisDay November 6, 1968
Jefferson Airplane play the opening night of legendary San Francisco venue the Fillmore West. Other celebrated artists to play the venue include Santana and Janis Joplin. Check out this incredible live, outdoor version of ‘The House At Pooneil Corners’ from the same year.

#OnThisDay November 7, 1975
Despite splitting in 1970, Simon & Garfunkel become the longest residing act in the UK album charts when ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ and ‘Greatest Hits’ notch up an incredible 367 weeks between them. In other words, that’s a total of just over seven years!

#OnThisDay November 8, 2008
The mighty AC/DC begin a two-week residency at the top of the US charts with ‘Black Ice’, their 15th studio album. Check out this electrifying version of ‘Big Jack’ from their legendary gig in Argentina’s River Plate stadium in 2009!

#OnThisDay November 9, 1971
Following a three-week climb up the UK singles chart, the mighty Slade score their first No. 1 with the insanely catchy ‘Coz I Luv You’. Did you know that the misspelling of the title was a nod to the band’s Black Country roots?

#OnThisDay November 10, 1955
The history of popular music is altered forever when Mae Boren Axton plays Elvis Presley a demo of a song she’d co-written with Tommy Durden called ‘Heartbreak Hotel’. The track becomes his first single for new label RCA Victor and becomes his breakthrough song. Things will never be the same again…
