Johnny Cash plays live for 2,000 inmates at Folsom Prison in California. The gig is recorded and released as ‘Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison’ and the album becomes one his most popular recordings.

Happy birthday to Foo Fighters’ lynchpin Dave Grohl! Did you know that he once made a cameo appearance on The X-Files in a 1996 episode called ‘Pusher’?

Paul Simonon auditions for the singer’s job in The London SS. Though he misses out on the job, he befriends the band’s guitarist Mick Jones and the pair go on to form The Clash when they hook up with singer-guitarist Joe Strummer.

George Michael’s status as an international superstar is sealed when his debut solo album, ‘Faith’, tops the US charts. It goes on to scoop the coveted Album Of The Year gong at the 1989 Grammy Awards.

Bruce Springsteen plays the inauguration concert for US president Barack Obama singing ‘The Rising’ and dueting with folk legend Pete Seeger on ‘This Land Is Your Land’.

Barry Manilow scores his first domestic No. 1 hit single with the monster smash that is ‘Mandy’. A hit in the UK, too, it reaches No. 11.
#OnThisDay January 19, 1980
Adam And The Ants’ debut album, ‘Dirk Wears White Sox’, becomes the first album to top the newly established Independent Album Charts. Check out this cracking live version of ‘Car Trouble’ recorded in 1981.
