THIS WEEK IN ROCK

August 4, 2019

Landmark chart spots, classic shows and many happy returns – it’s this week in rock as it happened…

#OnThisDay July 29, 1963
Elvis Presley scores his 14th No. 1 UK single when ‘(You’re The) Devil In Disguise’ hits pole position. Did you know that the single was voted a “miss” by celebrity guest John Lennon when it debuted on TV show ‘Juke Box Jury’?

#OnThisDay July 30, 1968
Many happy returns to Manic Street Preachers’ drumming powerhouse Sean Moore. A multi-talented musician, his trumpet solo on ‘Kevin Carter’ has also doubled up as the theme music to the current affair show, ‘Wales This Week’.

#OnThisDay July 31, 1977
Propelled by the success of the incredible single ‘Lido Shuffle’, Boz Scagg’s seventh album, ‘Silk Degrees’ re-enters the UK album charts. Just check out the groove on this!

#OnThisDay August 1, 1969
Janis Joplin, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane and Chicago are among the acts appearing at the Atlantic City Pop Festival in New Jersey. Making their East Coast debut, Santana are introduced by Joplin as her favourite band. Now that’s some endorsement, right?

#OnThisDay August 2, 1981
Shakin’ Stevens beats off the competition to remain at the top of the UK singles charts with his second No.1 single, ‘Green Door’. One of the biggest selling stars of the 80s, he’s scored a staggering 33 Top 40 singles including the chart toppers ‘The Ole House’, ‘Oh Julie’ and ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’.

#OnThisDay August 3, 1974
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band play the Schaefer Music Festival in New York’s Central Park. Tickets for the concert cost $2.50 and $1.50. The very first Schaefer Music Festival took place in 1967 and featured The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

#OnThisDay August 4, 1974
Bay City Rollers rise 12 places to No.5 in the UK singles chart with ‘Summerlove Sensation’, which peaks at No. 3. Did you know that it was later covered as ‘Petit Rainbow’ by singer Sylvie Vartan, who topped the French charts with it?
