THIS WEEK IN ROCK

August 11, 2019

The Manics, Paul Simon, Elvis, Snap!, Scott McKenzie, The Ronettes and Ghostbusters! It’s the week in rock and history as it happened…

#OnThisDay August 5, 2005
Manic Street Preachers’ third album, ‘The Holy Bible’, beats the likes of The Stone Roses’ eponymous debut album and Van Morrison’s ‘Astral Weeks’ when the viewers of the BBC’s late night current affairs show, ‘Newsnight’, vote it their favourite album of all-time.

#OnThisDay August 6, 1970
Paul Simon and Janis Joplin play the Concert For Peace at New York’s Shea Stadium. Check out this footage of Paul playing ‘The Sound Of Silence’ in Hyde Park last year.

#OnThisDay August 7, 1954
Elvis Presley plays the first of the 12 gigs that he’ll perform that year at the Eagles’ Nest in Memphis, Tennessee. The ad in the local paper says: “See and hear Elvis singing ‘That’s All Right’ and ‘The Blue Moon Of Kentucky’.”

#OnThisDay August 8, 1992
Snap! begin a six-week residency at the top of the UK charts with the mighty dancefloor smash, ‘Rhythm Is A Dancer’. The single also hits pole position in France, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands and Germany and finishes as the UK’s second biggest-selling single of 1992.

#OnThisDay August 9, 1967
Scott McKenzie reaches No. 1 in the UK with ‘San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair’), arguably the greatest hippie anthem of them all. Did you know that it sold over 7 million copies worldwide?

#OnThisDay August 10, 1947
A very happy birthday to the incredible Ronnie Spector. As leader of early 60s US girl-band The Ronettes, Ronnie and her sister Estelle, alongside cousin Nedra Talley, were the original bad-girl trio who the girls wanted to be and the boys wanted to get with.

#OnThisDay August 11, 1984: Who you gonna call? Ray Parker Jr starts a three-week run at the top of the US charts with the theme from the spooky comedy hit movie, ‘Ghostbusters’. A UK No. 2, the video features cameos from the likes of Chevy Chase, ‘Cheers’ star George Wendt and ‘Columbo’ actor Peter Falk among many others.
